Nudity Post-Baroque
Inspired by Caravaggio’s painting from 1603, Death of the Virgin, Nudity Post-Baroque is my bitter love letter to classic painting. Caravaggio’s original painting was shown briefly in galleries due to the rumour that he had used a sex worker to pose as the Virgin Mary. Fascinated with the use of the feminine body as decoration, I aimed to create a piece reminiscent of old masters, while bringing the subject and display into the contemporary. By contorting the subject’s spine, I intend to subtly disrupt the male gaze while simultaneously leaning into the sex appeal that makes images like these so popular.
